The Bells of Baddeck returns for another season
An operatic look at one of Cape Breton’s legendary heroes that struck a chord with residents and visitors alike last year is returning in July for another season.
Shown here are the members of the Airmen Quintet, from left to right are, Robyn Cathcart as Casey Baldwin, Chris Enns as Lieut. Selfridge, Geoffrey Sirett as Alexander Graham Bell, hidden person is Johnathon Kirby as JAD McCurdy, and Giles Tomkins as Glenn Curtiss.
The Bells of Baddeck will run from July 2 to August 2, with 21 shows. Eighteen will be at night each week and three will be 4 p.m. matinees, at the Alexander Graham Bell Museum. For creator Lorna MacDonald, a Port Morien native, being able to restage her work on the island is a gift worth savouring.
“It is a thrill,” said MacDonald in a phone interview from Toronto where she’s a voice studies professor and the Lois Marshall Chair in Voice at the University of Toronto’s Music School. “It was our story so to speak but also my life has been completely in the arts so to bring that back home was really wonderful for me.”
