Now is the time – End Poverty
with The Bells of Baddeck on July 8th.
You may have heard about the widely reported statistic that over one-third of Cape Breton children live in poverty. Having grown up in Cape Breton and achieved an international career in the performing arts, I want to do my part to help, and I am asking for your support.
On Friday, July 8, 2016, the music-drama The Bells of Baddeck: The Alexander Graham and Mabel Bell Story, of which I am creator and producer, will donate its entire revenue to the child poverty programs of United Way Cape Breton in a special performance entitled Now is the Time – End Poverty. Confirmed partners of this initiative are: the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site (Parks Canada), which is the performance venue, the Cape Breton Post, Belmac Supplies, the Bell Buoy Restaurant, and Big Spruce Brewing.
I am inviting you, and members of government at the federal, provincial and municipal level to attend and support this initiative. If you can make a contribution beyond ticket prices, that will add to the success of the initiative.
Alexander Graham and Mabel Bell were catalysts for social change and innovation, and you can be too.
The Bells of Baddeck, with 11 Cape Breton children in a 21-member professional, all-Canadian cast is a “can do” production, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. It depicts through original music and lyrics the struggles and successes of the Bells with historical accuracy and Celtic charm. A winner of Destination Cape Breton’s “Signature Event” in 2015 and 2016, and described nationally as “a tour de force production” (Opera Canada), the show is making an important contribution to the local economy and tourism. It has recently been nominated for a Parks Canada CEO Award of Excellence.
I am asking people of authority throughout Nova Scotia to attend, and to bring a child to the performance. Will you join us in Baddeck, Cape Breton on July 8, 2016? Tickets are available at www.BellsofBaddeck.com/tickets
The fate of the children of our beloved Island lies before us. I look forward to your support for Now is the Time.
